User Guide User Details
Overview
Use this tool to:
- Add and style user details blocks for teachers, TAs, and course designers
- Quickly add contact information for students to reference

The following panels will describe what can be accomplished in each section of this tool:
Content
The following controls are available in the Content section:
- 1. Role
- Optionally select a user role, to filter results in the Users section.
- 2. Refresh
- Update the Users list with most recent information.
- 3. Users
- Choose a user to display.
- 4. Image
- Image will be pulled from the user's Canvas account.
- 5. Change Image
- Select a different image.
- 6. Include/Exclude Image
- Use this checkbox to decide whether or not to include an image in the User Details.
- 7. Details
- Edit the user's details.
- 8. Icon Picker
- Select a desired icon for each User Detail section.
- 9. Include/Exclude
- Use the checkboxes to decide which details are included or excluded in the editor.
Style
Use the tools in the Style section to:
- 1. Style
- Choose a style to apply to the user details.
- 2. Alignment
- Align the user details left, center, or right.
- 3. Color
- Set a background color.
- 4. Icons
- Toggle icons on and off.
Instructions
Add User Details
To add a new User Details entry:
- Place your cursor in the editor where you want the user details to go.
- Open the Add tab.
- Select User Details. This will add a placeholder in the RCE.
- In the Content panel, select the Role and User to populate the image and user details.
Edit User Details
To edit the user details:
- Place your cursor within the user details.
- Make sure you are in the Edit Current Element tab.
- Choose the User Details option as the active tool.
- Edit the text of the user details in the Content panel.
- Adjust the card style, color, alignment, and icon visibility in the Style panel.
Remove User Details
To remove User Details:
- Place your cursor within the user details.
- Make sure you are in the Edit Current Element tab.
- Choose the User Details option as the active tool.
- In the Action Toolbar, click the Delete Tooltip button.

Design Considerations/Best Practices
Please consider the following when choosing to use User Details :
- Embedding an image of the user is recommended as it supports the personalization of the instructor.
- Add User Details in areas of your course that you anticipate students needing help.
- Providing an alternative email address or other form of contact can be helpful for emergencies.
Custom Course Roles
If your institution has custom course roles, they will be based on one of the three roles in the dropdown (Teacher, TA, or Designer).
Custom roles are not filtered out of the User Details tool. They are available from the Canvas role on which the custom role was based.
For this reason, we do not plan to have the User Details tool dropdown populate with all the custom roles of an institution. It will continue to simply load the base Canvas roles.
Legacy Comparison
While the option to add User Details was available in the legacy version of the Design Tools sidebar, this version adds the following features:
- Multiple layout choices
- Background color options
- Alignment options
- Ability to easily change user
